Would you eat a Whopper this size for breakfast?

Burger King has pulled out the big guns in the continuation of the fast food breakfast wars. In an effort to compete with McDonald’s and Taco Bell, Burger King is now offering a “Burgers at Breakfast” menu which will be available starting at 7 a.m., and will feature a variety of the burger chain’s popular Whoppers and other sandwiches like the Original Chicken Sandwich. Approximately 5,000 Burger King’s across the United States have agreed to the new breakfast menu and will begin rolling out the meaty morning options soon.

“The new menu allows guests to start their day being their way," said a Burger King representative in a statement. "Either with the great flame-broiled taste of our signature burgers and sandwiches or with our delicious suite of breakfast offerings."

The menu is likely to create buzz amongst the new Waffle Taco and AM Crunchwrap offerings on Taco Bell’s menu, just unveiled earlier this spring.

Burger King launches vegan Royale and plant-based Whopper

While the fast-food market is certainly much better for vegans than it used to be, there is often only one choice on the menu at each chain.

But Burger King is launching a new option, adding to bean burger already on the menu.

From today, you’ll be able to get a vegan-certified Royale from all stores.

And for those wanting to cut down on meat, there’s also the plant-based Whopper, which sadly isn’t certified vegan because of the way it is cooked alongside meat products, but is completed animal-product-free.

The Royale is a variation on the iconic chicken burger with a crispy coated, plant-based fillet, derived by The Vegetarian Butcher.

The ‘chicken’ is topped with iceberg lettuce, creamy vegan mayo and a toasted sesame seed bun.

Strict cooking processes, which ensure it’s kept completely separate from meat, dairy and egg products, have earned the new burger Vegan Society certification.

Soco Nunez, Marketing Director of Burger King UK, said: ‘At Burger King UK we’re all about delivering great tasting food for our customers, so we’ve purposefully taken our time with the Vegan Royale to make sure it’s the best on the market.

‘In fact, we would go as far as to say it’s an identical taste experience to the original Chicken Royale.’

Burger King’s fries are also now certified by the Vegan Society, meaning it can offer a completely vegan meal deal for £6.79.

Ericka Durgahee, Marketing Manager at The Vegan Society said ‘We’re delighted to be working closely with Burger King.

‘It’s fantastic to see that not only are they expanding their range to cater to vegan customers, but are going above and beyond by offering them delicious options that have been certified by the highly-trusted and sought-after Vegan Trademark.

‘Customers can rest assured that when they order items displaying the Vegan Trademark they’re free from animal products and animal testing and that cross-contamination has been minimised.’

The plant-based Whopper, which was trialled in 2020, will also be relaunched with a new recipe.

It is made up of a flame-grilled, soy-based patty, topped with tomatoes, fresh cut lettuce, vegan mayo, pickles, ketchup, and sliced onions on a sesame seed bun.

As it is cooked on the same grills as meat burgers, it cannot be certified as vegan.

The burger is priced at £4.79 and a meal is £6.79.

To celebrate the new launches, Burger King is also running ‘Meat Free Mondays’ offers at the start of every week.

Using the app, customers can get the Whopper for £1.99 today, with more deals planned for the next month.

Inventing Burger King's breakfast menu was a huge problem

In 1971, McDonald's gave one of their franchisees the go-ahead to sell morning offerings like donuts and sweet rolls. The following year, another McDonald's franchisee showed mogul Ray Croc his idea for a breakfast sandwich, and the fast food landscape was changed forever. That sandwich was the Egg McMuffin, and it led to billions in revenue for McDonald's. It's not surprising that other chains wanted to capture their own piece of the morning market, but according to The Balance Small Business, Burger King faced some unique challenges.

Even though they started trying to develop a breakfast menu in 1979, it would be another four years before breakfast debuted at Burger King. That's because McDonald's had a surprising advantage — the grills they used for their burgers could be easily adapted to breakfast items. In order to set themselves apart from other fast food chains, Burger King had built their image on their flame-grilling methods. The flame broilers weren't nearly as adaptable, and it took a long time to come up with an efficient and delicious set of menu items Burger King restaurants could cook with existing their equipment.

Vegan at Burger King

The prospect of a vegan burger means that Burger King will have even more options for those looking for a quick, cheap bite to eat.

Burger King fries are vegan, as are the Hash Brown Rounds. You can also order a Garden Side Salad without the cheese. For breakfast, diners can opt for oatmeal made with water instead of milk or the French Toast Sticks. There’s even dessert – the Dutch Apple Pie is free from all animal ingredients.

In June 2015, Burger King told Business Insider that it was looking to sell veggie burgers worldwide to meet the rising demand for plant-based food, particularly in the UK, where vegan food is extremely popular. Stateside, consumer eating habits are evolving to incorporate more vegan food – according to one recent sample survey, 59 percent of Americans eat at least one plant-based meal a day.

MorningStar has not yet announced when the Garden Veggie Patty at Burger King will be free from egg whites.

Burger King Brings in Business By Offering Burgers for Breakfast

CHICAGO -- With grease on his chin, Seth Kligerman, a 26-year-old medical student, is downing his second double cheeseburger -- and it isn't even 8 a.m.

He dismisses bagels and muffins as "wimpy." Cereal? He's hungry again by 10 a.m. "If I really need to get through the day, I eat a burger for breakfast," he says between bites at the Billy Goat Tavern here one recent morning.

Mr. Kligerman is part of an unusual breed of customer that some restaurants are trying to court: the breakfast burger eater. The group includes people who work unusual hours -- such as night-shift factory workers -- and may crave dinner-type fare when their workday ends in the morning. In Mr. Kligerman's line of work, meals -- like work hours -- can be erratic. "You're never guaranteed a meal when you work at a hospital," he says.

In Chicago, 275 Burger Kings now offer burgers for breakfast, rather than waiting until 10:30 a.m., when the menu typically is switched over to lunch fare. Results have been impressive: Breakfast sales at those restaurants have increased 4% to 7% since they started offering early morning burgers in 1997. And with a new television and print advertising push behind them, burgers now make up 35% to 40% of all morning sales.

A Burger King spokesman wouldn't comment on whether the concept is likely to go national, except to say that the headquarters staff in Miami is watching the experiment and finds it encouraging.

Ham, Egg & Cheese Biscuit

There's a reason this classic is on every fast food breakfast menu—it tastes good. There's also a reason why you shouldn't eat too many: It tastes good because of the salt. Burger King's version has a full day's worth, thanks to a biscuit soaked in 710 grams of it. Eating too much sodium just may be the reason you're not losing belly fat!

It helped Ellen get her start

The Whopper's impact on humanity is significant enough as it is when you factor in such things as all those friends lost to that app and the inevitable rising of cholesterol levels all over the planet, but who'd have thought it'd have kick-started the career of Ellen DeGeneres, too?

According to Ellen herself (via HuffPost), she showed up to a fundraiser armed only with a Whopper, fries and a shake. She said, "I went on stage, and I said, 'This is my first time being on stage and I have to admit, I'm a little nervous. I didn't know what I was going to say, and I realized I hadn't eaten all day, so I hope you don't mind — I stopped and grabbed something to eat on the way.' Then I would say, 'But what I wanted to talk about was. ' and then I would take a bite. While I was chewing, I'd put a finger up and then just go, 'Oh, that is good. That's better.' And then I would start the sentence again. I ate the entire meal and didn't finish the sentence."

After that bit, her gigs started to pick up, and soon she became the Ellen we know and love today.
